Set up Your UBC CWL account

New to UBC

If you do not already have a UBC Campus-Wide Login (CWL) account you will need to create one.

First, you will need a UBC MRES number (also your UBC Student number) to create your CWL account. You can find your student number in an email from UBC Enrolment Services (ubc.systems@ubc.ca) and/or UBC PGME (rms.support@ubc.ca).

Once you have your student (MRES) number, go to the CWL Account Sign Up page and follow the onscreen instructions to validate your identity and activate your student CWL account.

  • Your affiliation type is “Student & Alumni”
  • Your temporary password is your birthday in yymmdd format

Once you’re done remember to setup multi-factor authentication.

Returning to UBC or Already Have an Existing CWL

If you have previously attended UBC or already have an existing CWL, please use your existing CWL account and do not create another one. Please login to myaccount.ubc.ca with your CWL to confirm your MRES (student) number is present. Ensure the MRES number matches your existing UBC student number. If it does not match or if there is no student number present, call UBC IT Service Centre at (604) 822-2008 to perform an identity verification by phone and to resolve the issue. You will also need to sign up for Multi-Factor Authentication if you do not already have it. Please see CWL Multi-Factor Authentication Setup section below.

Inactive CWL Account

If a CWL account has not been used for a long period of time, it may become inactive or suspended. To activate an inactive CWL account, you need to reset your CWL password:

  1. Go to myaccount.ubc.ca
  2. Click on “Forgot your CWL Password?” near the bottom
  3. Choose the “Reset password by email” option

If you do not see the “reset password by email” option, please call UBC IT Service Centre at 604.822.2008 to perform a manual password reset.

If You Have More Than One CWL

Please call UBC IT Service Centre at (604) 822-2008 to perform an identity verification by phone and to resolve the duplication. Due to UBC’s privacy and security policies, this cannot be done by email.

Changing Your CWL Username

Change your CWL username either by visiting myaccount.ubc.ca or by contacting UBC IT Service Centre at (604) 822-2008. Please note: If you change your CWL username after logging in to RMS, you will need to contact RMS Support and have your updated CWL name resynced to RMS or you will not be able to use your updated CWL name to log in.

CWL Multi-Factor Authentication Setup

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is mandatory and adds an extra layer of security to your CWL account, ensuring that only you have access to your sensitive information.

This additional authentication step will require you to verify your identity through a secondary method, such as a verification code or a push notification to your mobile device, in addition to your regular username and password. With MFA, even if someone gains access to your password, they won’t be able to log in.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to enroll in MFA, or you can learn more on UBC IT’s website.
