Residency Training

UBC residency training leads to certification by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.



The Faculty of Medicine offers two Family Medicine programs, in addition to 73 specialty and sub-specialty training programs.

Training Duration

The duration of training varies from two years for Family Medicine to four to seven years for other specialties and sub-specialties.


Applications for entry-level postgraduate positions in all primary certification programs, as well as applications for R3 CFPC Emergency Medicine programs, R4 Subspecialty Medicine and Adult Critical Care programs, and Subspecialty Pediatric programs at UBC are made through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).
