Acquire Medical Liability Protection with Canadian Medical Protective Association

Medical Liability Protection iconAll residents must have medical liability protection for the entire duration of their training. Each resident should arrange and maintain their own coverage and membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).

CMPA coverage is mandatory and a condition of the resident’s license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and part of the Resident Collective Agreement between HEABC and RDBC. All residents must be appropriately protected for any medico-legal issues that may arise during their training. Without liability protection, UBC residents are in breach of their educational license with the College.

Late requests for CMPA membership expose residents to significant risk, as it means they have been without liability protection for that period of time.

All UBC residents are reimbursed CMPA expenses via their pay on a monthly recurring basis. This will show as a separate line item on paystubs (See section A44 Membership Reimbursement). This is considered a business expense and is not taxable.

Applying for Membership

New residents can expect to receive an email from the CMPA by late April inviting them to become a member. If residents have not received an email from CMPA, they can apply for membership by registering for an account on the CMPA website.

If a resident already has CMPA coverage but is new to UBC, they will need to contact CMPA to transfer existing coverage to UBC as their home school and update their mailing address.

If residents are former CMPA members, they will need to reactivate their membership.

See the CMPA website or call CMPA directly at 1-800-267-6522 with any questions.
