UBC Resident Wellness Office

Free and confidential counselling for all UBC residents and their spouses/common-law partners. Counselling is provided in-person at DHCC and SMH, over the telephone, and through Skype.
Hours: General hours of operation are Mon-Fri from 8:00am-5:00pm, with evening appointments available on certain days of the week.

Reasons to refer: For preventative support: to help residents thrive in residency; feeling distressed: anxious thoughts, low mood, high stress, feelings of burnout; wanting to engage in self-reflection; working through challenges.

UBC Resident Peer-to-Peer Network

The Peer-to-Peer Network is an informal and confidential peer support program where residents can get connected with another resident who has been through a common experience to share learnings, receive support, and perhaps gain another perspective.

Reasons to refer: Talking to someone who has been though something similar; relating on common experiences; learning from others; gaining different perspectives.

Physician Health Program of BC

Free and confidential counselling for all BC physicians (including residents) and referrals to psychiatrists and family physicians. The toll-free helpline is available 24 hours a day and residents can receive counselling over the telephone or ask to be connected with in-person counselling with a counsellor in their local area, at no cost.

Reasons to refer: Immediate need of support; referral to GP or psychiatrist; after-hours needs, connecting with a local counsellor in one’s area.

Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP)

Free and confidential counselling for all UBC residents and their spouses/common-law partners. EFAP is a confidential counselling service specialized to provide service to healthcare employees and families throughout BC. They have an “affiliate network” with counsellors anywhere clients are, and also offer telephone counselling. EFAP provides short term counselling, 4-6 sessions on average.
