Group Support Programs

The RCAPS Office provides a variety of groups supports both in person and virtually. We make efforts to do site visits to distributed sites 1-2 times per academic year to provide Ice Cream Rounds. In addition, RCAPS Office offers several virtual offerings throughout the year including a support group for residents on leave and our newest, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & Executive Functioning Group. Explore our group supports below!

Ice Cream Rounds

This group support is a confidential, resident-only mental health discussion that allows residents to connect, offer one another support, and share in the highs and lows of residency. Residency can be intense and overwhelming and the sharing of experiences in a safe, non-evaluative environment helps residents to feel more connected to their work, one another and ultimately themselves. Most commonly booked during an Academic Half Day, an Ice Cream Round can be requested by a program administrator or lead resident for the program. For informal outlets to discuss without the RCAPS team, download our Peer-Led Ice Cream Rounds Toolkit as a framework to facilitate Ice Cream Rounds independently.

Resident on Leave Group

Many residents that have gone on leave have described it as being a very stressful and isolating experience resulting in a strong desire to connect with others. This confidential support is a 4 week virtual group facilitated by our registered clinical counsellors on Zoom. The content builds on the evidence-based approach of Mindful Self Compassion by Kristen Neff to develop healthy coping skills for residents currently on leave. The group is open for leaves of any type including: parental, medical, or stress and occurs three times per year.

ADHD & Executive Functioning Group

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Executive Functioning impairments often go unnoticed in high-performing individuals pursuing medicine. It has been noted that upon entering residency, many residents with suspected ADHD like symptoms become more impacted by administrative and life demands during medical training. Overwhelmingly, in fall 2023, the demand for executive functioning supports amongst the UBC resident population became high during the pilot of the “Focus & Flow Group for ADHD & Executive Functioning Support”. Considering the needs of neuro-diverse residents, the RCAPS Office is offering its second iteration of this virtual group to provide support through a neuroscience based executive functioning skills group for residents experiencing symptoms of ADHD. A diagnosis of ADHD is not required for participation in the group.

Upcoming Group Dates

Every Wednesday from 5:30pm-7:00pm, starting September 25th 2024 through to November 6th 2024.

Facts, Feelings, Future

Are you looking for a way to support your residents during a difficult time or following an adverse event? Did you know that the counsellors are all trained in Critical Incident Stress Management and are available to support your residents following distressing events? Imagine a confidential setting and group focused on 1. Facts: What happened & dispelling rumours 2.Feelings: How are residents coping? 3. Future: What can residents do to move forward? The aim is to offer connection, mitigate false narratives and educate learners on expectations following a distressing event, suggestions for coping, and additional referrals for help. Groups can be as small as 4 residents and participants will have all been similarly affected (present at the time of the event).

Distressing Events Include:

  • Accreditation Loss
  • Critical Incident
  • Patient Loss Affecting Multiple Trainees
  • Mistreatment
  • Suicide or death of resident/Attending Physician
  • Unusual Situation (ex. many residents not passing the Royal College Exam)
