PGME Scholar Day 2025: Celebrating Resident Research Excellence

PGME Scholar Day Award Winners

On October 16, 2025, the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office hosted the inaugural PGME Scholar Day, highlighting the outstanding scholarly work of our postgraduate trainees. The event featured 21 resident-led presentations in research, quality improvement, and innovation, showcasing the depth of talent within our community. Presentations explored topics such as artificial intelligence and large language models in various contexts, using augmented reality to guide surgeries, South Asian women’s healthcare in Canada, cancer prevention, updates on viral conjunctivitis treatment strategies, perceptions of ADHD in Postgraduate Medical Education and more!

We are excited to announce that the winners from the first PGME Scholar Day are:

  • 1st Prize:  Dr. Alex Lee (CIP/General Surgery), Operative Notes Under Pressure: Assessing Large Language Models Across Emergency General Surgery Case Complexity 
  • 2nd Prize:  Dr. Philip Edgcumbe (CIP/Diagnostic Radiology), Augmented Reality-Guided DIEP Flap Harvest: A Feasibility Study
  • 3rd Prize (tie):  Dr. Emily O’Reilly (Radiation Oncology), Effect of Same-Day VMAT on Resource Utilization in Rapid Access Palliative Radiotherapy Clinics
  • 3rd Prize (tie):  Dr. Ella Barrett-Chan (Obstetrics & Gynecology), Window of Opportunity for Cancer Prevention: Metachronous BRCA-associated Breast and Ovarian Cancers in BC

Winners were selected by the panel of judges which included our PGME Research Faculty Co-Leads Dr Alice Mui and Dr Joseph Leung, as well as the PGME Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Faculty Lead Dr Esther Lee, the UBC Clinician Investigator Program Program Director Dr Sian Spacey, and Dr Rochelle Stimpson from the Department of Family Practice.
